A like-for-like window swap is a half-day job. Enlarging the opening is building work: a lintel, brickwork and making good inside and out, which is a different quote entirely.
Windows are usually done alongside the cabinetry so the sill and splashback land together. Full renovation scope is under Kitchen Renovations Cape Town.
Send the window dimensions and say whether the opening is changing size.

| Frame | Practical notes |
|---|---|
| Aluminium | The Cape Town default. Slim frames, no rot, and it handles coastal air well when properly coated. |
| uPVC | Best thermal and sound performance. Bulkier frames and a longer lead time. |
| Timber | Right for heritage and character properties. Needs sealing every few years. |

These are indicative market ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African kitchen pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not the rate card of any company on this platform.
Order the window before the splashback, not after. Tiling or a stone panel fitted up to an old frame has to be cut back when the new frame goes in, and that damage is rarely repairable neatly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I enlarge my kitchen window?
Usually, but it needs a lintel above the new opening and it becomes building work rather than a window swap.
Widening beyond the existing lintel span, or working on a load-bearing wall, needs an engineer's input.
Is aluminium or uPVC better near the coast?
Both perform well. Powder-coated aluminium is the Cape Town standard and handles salt air; uPVC does not corrode at all but frames are bulkier.
For aluminium near the sea, ask for a marine-grade coating specification.
How long does a window replacement take?
A like-for-like swap is usually a half to one day per window once the frame has been manufactured. Manufacture itself takes two to four weeks.
Enlarging an opening adds several days for brickwork and curing.
Do I need approval to change a kitchen window?
Not for a like-for-like replacement. Changing the size or position alters the elevation, which may need council approval and, on a heritage property, Heritage Western Cape consent.
