Tiling is quoted in two parts: the tile and the labour. Labour is where quotes diverge, because large-format tiles, patterns and an uneven substrate all add time without adding material.
Check the substrate before comparing prices. Renovation sequencing is covered under Kitchen Renovations Cape Town.
Send the floor area and wall area in square metres.
Get a Tiling QuoteWhat Changes the Labour Rate
- Tile size. Large-format tiles over 600 mm need a flatter substrate and more hands.
- Pattern. Herringbone and brick-bond cut more tiles and take longer than a straight lay.
- Substrate. A floor out of level needs screeding first, at R120 to R350 a square metre.
- Removal. Lifting old tile is the messiest and most labour-heavy part of the job.

Order 10% to 15% more tile than the measured area. Cuts, breakages and future repairs all come out of that, and dye lots change between batches so matching later is rarely possible.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should the floor be tiled before the cupboards go in?
Before, where budget allows. It uses more tile but means an appliance can be replaced later without meeting a ridge at the cupboard line.
How much extra tile should I order?
Ten to fifteen per cent over the measured area, for cuts, breakages and future repairs. Dye lots change between batches, so matching later is rarely possible.
Can I tile over existing tiles?
Sometimes, with a primer and the right adhesive, but it raises the floor 15 to 20 mm which affects door clearances and appliance heights.
In a kitchen, lifting the old floor is usually the cleaner answer.
Why is wall tiling more expensive than floor tiling?
More cutting around plug points, window reveals and cupboard edges, and every tile has to be supported while the adhesive grabs.
